Years ago when the war in Syria began, my family left Syria  to save our lives.  One night, we all got on a boat to reach Europe.  Unfortunately, the overcrowded boat sank in the rough sea. I was the only survivor but left with no family, no home, no hope.

A man walked into the bank to withdraw money.  As he entered the bank with his hands in his pockets, everyone thought that he was a robber.  They all fell on the floor faced down.  They were afraid of him thinking he was a criminal just because he was black.

It was Mariza’s first day at her new school. The students made fun of her.  She felt unhappy and didn’t want to go to school again. Mariza’s parents advised her not to pay attention to them. A week later,  she went back to school. The students apologized and made friends.

A new student came to our school a week after school opened.  The other studenets madde fun of him because he was different.  After being bullied for a long time, he decided to face the bullies. Unfortunately, he was badly hit in the face. Eventually, he decided to change school.

I moved house five years ago. Everyone around me called me black.  I felt disappointed and disadvantaged I am human like everyone else with the same rights. Being lost in my sadness, a girl approached me and said, “Hi, I’m Ermioni. What’s your name?”  “Khari” I replied with a smile.

I said I liked her hair. She smiled at me genuinely.  I smiled back.  I forgot about it after a few minutes. She went home feeling happy that day.  What I didn’t realise is that a small compliment made her believe in herself again.  It changed her.  It saved her.

I couldn’t stand it anymore seeing her crying and breaking inside. It was killing me. I didn’t know how to help.  This had to stop.  Her world needed to brighten up. She needed to love herself. The only problem was that she forgot how to do that. I could help.

Tony and Steve were very close friends. One day a new student named James came to their school.  He was Steve’s childhood friend.  James didn’t like Tony and they had a big argument. Steve didn’t know whose side to take.  Eventually, he chose James and Tony was sad and heartbroken.

Saving a cat’s life by Andreas(A31 class, March 2017)

One day, as I was walking in the street I saw a hurt cat. No one has stopped to help it. I picked it up and I realized that it had a broken bone so I took it to the vet. He thanked me for my good deed by giving me 100 euros. Fortunately he saved the cat’s life.

While I was in my mum’s car, I saw a hurt dog on the ground. No body helped it. We took it to the vet. The dog would be well.  I wanted to keep it. But the dog owner appeared and surprisingly he gave me $100,000 for saving his dog.

I want to see my dad again.  He is fighting for our country’s freedom.  Why do we have to go through this awful situation? Why can’t we just let peace lead us to paradise? I want my life back. I truly want to smile again and see the sun again.

Stop that sound by Emily (A23 class, March 2017)

This terrible sound is always in my mind. Stop bombarding us, Stop shooting us, stop killing us, Stop the war”.  I need peace.  I need to go back to Syria, back to my home.  Everything is getting worse.  Please help me get out of here.  Please stop that awful sound.

There was a boy from Syria named Ahmed who managed to come to Cyprus as a refugee after a very difficult journey.  The children at his school didn’t like him because of his colour.  But the teachers decided to put some thought into them.  It worked as everyone became happy.

There was a rich girl who didn’t care about how money was earned. All she wanted was to get more money. She used people to satisfy her greed for money. One day she visited a poor country.  She saw poverty and started crying. She gave all her money to charity.

A man was driving his car at normal speed when a police officer suddenly stopped him and asked him to get out of his car.  He stood in front of the police taking his wallet out of his pocket. Immediately, the policeman shot him dead. He mistook the wallet for a gun.

You could see it in her eyes that she was scared.  It happened again at lunch break.  They took her meal and punched her.  All those bad guys made fun of her.  I saw her crying but I couldn’t do anything. All that happened just because she had black skin.

A man was in love and he confessed his love to the woman he loved.  Sadly, the woman, although she loved him, rejected him because he was ugly and poor.  They took separate ways. They both led a relatively good life but without real happiness because they were not together.

A four year old boy couldn’t walk.  He tried repeatedly every day, every minute.  When he turned five, he made it.  He could walk, run and play with the other children.  Unexpectedly, a month later he was diagnosed with a permanent handicap.  He wouldn’t be able to use his legs.

Depression is the only thing that holds me down.  I truly want to make it.  For that I have no doubt. How can I follow my dreams when there is this demon dragging me down? This demon, always walks with me.  Even when I feel alone, it’s there hunting me.

Amado from the Philippines joined our school.  My friends called him names because of his colour and nationality.  I was frustrated with their attitude and I told them off. They stopped talking to me. My only friend was Amado.  Later, they changed attitude and became friends with Amado and me.

A guy named Michael was at the airport.   Suddenly, an old man kindly asked him to hold his bag for a while so he could go to a shop.  Michael readily took the bag to help him. Unexpectedly, the police arrested Michael for burglary as reported by the old man.
